Heat Setting

Heat setting of curls is a great way to get curls when you don’t have time to let a wet set air dry. It can take longer in one sitting to produce the curls (depending on the amount of curl desired and the overall length of the hair), but it is far more straightforward a process and means that when you are finished, you are finished.

Preparation:

• Curling Iron(s)

• Styling Cape

• Comb

• Hairspray

• Extension cord/Power cable

Again, make sure to have a movable place to set up your tools and do so in advance, so that you aren't taxing the endurance level of the person you are working with. Use a TV tray, or small table, and make sure that you have an extension cord for your power supply so that you can reach wherever you need to with your heat-styling tool. And as discussed before, be sure to make sure you know how you will be able to access whatever portion of the hair you are going to be working with.

With any heat styling process, you want to begin using clean, dry hair. Prepare the hair to maximize the curl by spraying it with a light misting of hairspray. Be sure to let the hairspray dry completely in the hair before attempting to create curl, since applying the hot iron to damp hairspray can result in a sticky patch and smoking/singed hair.

Curl the hair with the heated appliance as normal, working in small sections around the perimeter of the head. Be careful with the angles of approach given that you will have different positioning than you may be accustomed to.

Once you have set the hair into curls as desired, you can allow the hair to cool completely and comb out the curl as desired for styling.

Straightening the Hair:

Straightening the hair can also be accomplished in two different ways, although, to be more precise, it's more a matter of using two different processes to achieve optimal results. These two processes are: blow-dryer straightening and flat-ironing. Done properly, each of these will remove curl/wave from the hair. However, used together, you can achieve better results than simply using either process on their own.

Preparation:

• Flat Iron

• Blow Dryer with concentrator

• Styling Cape

• Spray bottle with water

• Bristled Brush

• Comb

• Hairspray

• Extension cord/Power cable

Blow dryer with concentrator

Now, as mentioned above, you can blow-out the hair for straightening, using your blow-dryer and your bristled brush to keep the hair taut as you heat/dry it, and this will usually give you smooth, straight hair. Take the clean, dry hair and lightly moisten it with a spray bottle of water, then attach the concentrator to your hair dryer and begin drying/straightening the hair in small sections, working from the bottom to the top from front to back.

However, if the hair is already mostly straight, you could simply use your flat iron to straighten the hair fully. Again, make sure to be careful about your angles of approach because you will be working at awkward positions with a hot appliance and want to be wary of burns.

Simply take the clean, dry hair and lightly mist it with hairspray. Allow the hairspray to dry fully, then use your comb to take thin slices and pass them evenly and quickly between the hot plates of the flat iron. The resulting strands should come out smooth and glossy.

In cases where the hair is curly to start and you want it straight, you may need to use both techniques. Furthermore, using both techniques will give you longer-lasting results in hard-to-style hair.
