Very Short Bangs

Q: For the first time ever I plan to cut my bangs very short for summer. They are eyebrow length now and I'm a bit worried about the effect of very short bangs. What, in general is the effect of very short bangs on a person's appearance? I have a square face.

A: Hi. Short bangs and particularly square-cut styles are having a bit of a resurrection moment right now. If you already have a square face, it will intensify the square-like appearance even more. This can be alarming for someone who is selfconscious about their square facial shape, and who generally tries to play down this feature of their appearance. But a square face is not necessarily a bad thing.

A square face shape can be very unique and make you stand out from the crown in a fresh and trendy way. One such an example is Jessie J. She has a very square face shape and a particularly strong and prominent jawline. She chooses to play these features up instead of softening that impressive visual blow when you really look at her. The end result is a punchy and fresh face among countless typecast Hollywood and MTV drones.

She often wears her hair in a solid medium bob, which is a prominently square shaped hairstyle. She also wears her bangs in a thick and solid style, a straight and perfectly horizontal line across her forehead. To intensify this square-like appearance, she colors her hair very dark brown or black, which stands out in direct contrast to her pale skin. This makes for very solid, stark lines concerning her haircut. She actually uses her distinctly square face to her advantage to stand apart from the crowd, and plays up her features by focusing her look on her facial shape.

Very short bangs can be tricky, especially if you have cowlicks or contrasting growth patterns in this area. Luckily you already have bangs, so your hair is used to be worn this way.

Very short bangs obviously work best on very straight and smooth hair of medium to thick density and thickness. Very curly hair will have to be blow-dried and flat-ironed on a daily basis. If this is the case, please remember to always apply a good heat protection product to your hair before applying any heat to it.

If you have straight hair, then you'll probably cope easily with very short bangs. There's a chance that some of the hair might spring up at the beginning, especially in the case of growth patterns in this area. If this does happen, merely use a clip and clip down the hair in the style/direction that you want it to fall naturally; when you go to bed at night.

If you are overweight or have a very wide face, very short bangs are probably not the best idea, as this could make your face seem even wider. But as you already have bangs, this is probably not your case.
