Remove Paint from Hair

Q: I have dry paint in my hair. How can I get it out?

A: Well, there is the obvious option of using turpentine or mineral spirits (paint thinners) to remove the paint from the hair, but these are strong compounds that can have adverse effects, not to mention very strong odors associated with them. In addition, if you color your hair, these compounds can remove your hair color and can damage the hair.

Some suggestions for gentler ways of removing paint from the hair are as follows:

For water-based paints, simply wet the hair and apply a liberal amount of your favourite shampoo to the hair. If the paint in question has dried, then you may need to allow the shampoo to sit on the painted strands and allow it to soften. Once the paint has softened, use a fine tooth comb to gently remove the paint from the hair. Once the paint is out, you can rinse the hair as normal, and use a good conditioner to smooth the strands.

For oil-based paints, the go-to remover is Olive Oil. Apply the olive oil to the drops of paint in the hair and gently work out the paint using a fine-tooth comb. If the paint is dried or for larger spills, you may need to apply a liberal amount of oil and wrap the hair with plastic wrap and allow it to sit for a few hours.

Once the paint is loosened (and the oil has soaked into the hair) you can begin to work the paint out of the hair with the fine tooth comb. Afterward, wash your hair with your favourite shampoo, and repeat as needed to get your hair back to its balance. On the plus side, the olive oil is a great conditioning treatment for the hair.
