Q: I love Morena Baccarin's short blonde hair! I'm a Latina too, and Morena Baccarin was my inspiration to chop off my long hair a few months ago and go for a pixie cut.

I'm happy with the pixie, and going blonde might be my next makeover. Morena's blonde color looks a kind of special. It's almost like you see some black in it and that makes it look so lovely. Is this the new growth or did the colorist use a special coloring technique?

A: Brazilian-born actress Morena Baccarin, has naturally dark hair (typical of her latin heritage) which makes the transition to blonde a very dramatic move. She herself is quoted as saying that she was more afraid of her transition from long hair to the gamine-short style shown here than of taking on the lead role in the hit show “V” (a reimagining of the 1983 miniseries).

However, her short hair inspired a resurgence of super-short hairstyles among young women, and now I expect that you won’t be alone in wanting to emulate Ms. Baccarin’s new blonde locks.

In this photo, you can indeed see some darker tones at the scalp which has the benefit of giving some depth to the hair and emphasizing the texture and definition of the locks. However, you can’t really determine whether the result is intentionally created, or if it is the result of new growth of her naturally ebon shade. It is even entirely possible that the look was “planned” to account for the new growth’s appearance and the development of this particular result.

I do want to offer a serious warning for any woman wishing to make this kind of dramatic color change to her own dark hair - particularly in the case of Latinas and others of ethnic descent whose hair is naturally “black” in color (such as Mediterranean, Asian, Arabic, and others). Going from black hair to this level of blonde is NOT something you can accomplish on your own, nor should you attempt to do so.

Without a doubt, Ms. Baccarin achieved this look through the efforts of a highly skilled professional, and if you seriously want to emulate her look, you need to find a skilled professional of your own. PLEASE, do not attempt to lighten your hair this much on your own.
