Thin Hair and Dreadlocks

Q: Well, I have thin, straight hair and was really interested in having dreadlocks. Is this possible? And one other question: I wanted to know if it was possible to have curls.

A: Fine, straight hair is not generally conducive to creating dreadlocks since the hair needs a certain amount of curl or kink in order to "lock" the strands together in segments. This is why the style originated among ethnic groups who have coarse, kinky hair.

Now, it is possible to have your hair permed in a tight, curly pattern and then twisted into locks. You can even have extra fiber "filler" added to the locks to create thicker dreads than are naturally creatable from your own hair.

Your best bet is to visit a salon/stylist that specializes in dreadlock styles. Ask him/her to give their professional assessment of the level of success you can anticipate. You also want to talk carefully about the necessary care of dreadlocks to make certain that you will be able to do what you need to do to ensure a successful result.

For example: in many cases, the hair cannot be shampooed as often and many people find that they can't cope with the care restrictions necessary.

As for curling your thin, straight hair, there should be no problem as long as your hair is in good condition. You should be able to get a permanent wave to give the hair the size of curls that you want. Your stylist will be able to choose the right permanent wave formula for your hair texture to ensure a safe and successful result.
