Q: I have curly hair with a lot of "body" and while hairdressers always say I am very lucky. I would like to tame it. I have tried many products, but none have worked at my attempt to tame the "poof" my hair gets.

A: It's funny, but many women who have truly body-full hair (particularly hair that is curly) often feel it to be as much of a problem as limp, listless hair. I can understand why. The bottom line is when the hair takes effort to style and maintain it stops being fun. So, let's see what we can do to make the hair easier to manage.

In cases of people with curly hair, the poof comes as a result of the lightness of the hair combined with the wave. Very curly hair often has a tendency to be more coarse and sometimes more porous, making it prone to dryness. The best place to start is by using a protein-rich shampoo and conditioner and making certain to only shampoo the hair when it is dirty. However, you need to condition your hair every day.

Most people find that once they have restored their hair proper moisture level that the hair becomes much easier to style and maintain. If the hair seems to still need additional weight to manage the poof, try using a leave-in spray conditioner and anti-frizz serum to keep the hair weighed down.

Remember that it may take some time to get your hair's moisture balance restored. The hair likely didn't get moisture deprived overnight, and the moisture will not be restored overnight. Just start a hair care routine and stick with it. Soon you'll see noticeable results and will be much happier with your hair's behavior.
