Loosen Curly Hair

Q: I want to loosen my really curly hair so that it is just wavy. However, from what I've read on the Internet, a spiral perm makes the curls look like banana curls (or like those strawberry shortcake curls... lol). Is this true or will it simply make my curls wavy?

A: Well, for the purpose of loosening the curls to be simply wavy, the secret is using the largest possible wrapping tool. In some cases, you may even find a stylist who performs Specialty Perms and uses non-traditional perming tools, such as the largest of the magnetic rollers used for wet roller sets, or in some cases orange juice canisters.

If you want tighter waves, you can also braid large sections of your freshly washed and conditioned hair and allow the hair to dry in the braids. The problem with this is that it can lead to bushy hair depending on the length of your hair.
