1990s Hairstyles

1990s hairstyles for women

Q: I'm doing a project for school, and I need to know more about hairstyles in the 1990s. Can you tell me more about hairstyles for women that were popular in that era? What factors influenced the hairstyles?

A: In the 1990s we saw the transition from the "big hair" era of the 80s to a softer, smoother series of hairstyles and haircuts. Flat ironing came into fashion, as did razor cutting which enabled the creation of smoothly transitioning layered cuts and soft, sexy, and mostly straight styles.

Perhaps the most iconic hairstyle of the 1990s was "The Rachel", which was made popular by the television show "Friends" and named for the character of "Rachel Green" played by Jennifer Anniston.

The "Rachel" combined all the key elements of the 90s hairstyles: razor cut layering, smooth styling and softly finished ends. Millions of women were flocking to hairstylists to have their hair cut and styled like "Rachel" on friends.

Even outside of the longer-layered styles, softness was key. The spiral curl perms and rocker-chick mullet styles of the 80s gave way to waves and softly textured styles even among the shorter looks.
