Q: Hi, I really appreciate your work, great job! I'm a man with medium length hairv and it falls on the ears. I've always been fascinated by fine, straight hair. Just like David Bowie's in his recent periods.

Ok, here's my question. How do we make the hair still like this and give this kind of wet looking effect? It really bothers me. I don't like using gel, well not too much. Can you give me an advice on how to mimic this magnificent haircut?

A: I agree with you that Bowie's recent looks have been great. And they are relatively easy to create. You do, however, need to start with fine hair, or at least with hair that is relatively straight. The hair can be flat-ironed if needed to make it smoother, but very coarse hair won't be able to get the right look, even when straightened.

As for creating the look without using styling gel, this can be done by using a lighter styling product, like mousse or a liquid spray-gel. The key is to use a product of some type to weigh the hair down.

Generally, after shampooing you can use a mousse or spray-gel on the hair while it's still wet, then add anti-frizz or smoothing serum to the hair, and blow-dry it until it is mostly dry, but still a little damp, then use the fingers to finish styling the hair so that you get the "wet" and "heavy" looking locks like Bowie has.

If you need or want more clearly defined strands, try using a little pomade (hair wax) on the tips of the fingers and rake them through the hair.

It looks as though this is the same techniques Bowie's stylist used on his hair. The pomade is great for creating definition in the locks and leaving them free to move as needed.
